Jo Monfort is not only beautiful but she's also rich. She's currently in school and soon they will marry her to a rich bachelor, which is the very last thing she wants, since she wants to become a writer, just like the newspaper reporter Nellie Bly.
Her life seems perfect, until tragedy strikes... her father dies and  pleople tell her that he shot himself accidentally, but she doesn't belive them... she can't believe them. She returns to New York so she can bury and mourn her father.
Her suspicions start to grow, as she investigates the events that lead to her father's death and that makes her want to keep digging and sneaking around her mother so she can investigate. Then she meets Eddie Gallagher a very attractive man that doesn't act like any one she's ever met, including being brutally honest. He's a reporter and he's convinced that her father commited suicide.
Together Eddie and Jo start a journey to discover what dark mysteries are hidden in the midst of the Monforts and the New York Elite so they can find out what really happened to Jo's father.
The first thought I have about this book is that it is great! It's not a gooey love story, the kind we're all sick of hearing! This story has mysterie, love and very important lessons about what life was like a few years ago. You can get a realistic glimpse on the dark corners of the city and on the inhuman life that women had.
The characters in this book are extremely complex and realistic, from the rich matron to the master thief, and the locations are various, from the Monfort Mansion to the Brooklyn Bridge and more. Every character's character is unique and sometimes very disturbing because you get a glimpse to how "brainwashed" high society women were.
It may be obvious but Jo is my favourite character in the whole story, due to her strong character, will power and fearlessness! She makes me want to be a better person and is she, with a little (maybe a lot) of help from Mr. Eddie Gallagher, that gives this book the emotion, mysterie and fun that this book needs!
I could try and define this story and fit it in only one genre, but that's impossible! This story has historical elements but it also has that young adult feel into it and a love story as well. What more could you ask for? The combination of themes blends so well and so beautifully that you will be unnable to put down this book.
This is a perfect book for everyone! Prepare yourselves to be educated as you're having fun! If you feel unconfortable with "adult situations" this is also a good book for you because it only goes as far as kissing and desire.
