Rise
Sierra Cross
(Coven of Fire, #1)
Publication date: June 15th 2017
Genres: New Adult, Urban Fantasy
I closed the door on magic long ago…the day it made me an orphan.
Ten years ago, the Coven of Fire sacrificed their lives—my mother among them—to hold off an overwhelming demonic force. Now it’s back.
As a poorly-paid bartender, how can any of this be my problem? But Callie, another orphan of that battle, swears I’m the key to reviving the coven. And there’s an incredibly sexy guardian stranded on my couch who’s promising to help me stop the demons and keep the veil between the realms standing.
One problem: I’ve never been able to use magic. Our local bad boy warlock assures me I have the talent, but even if I did, we don’t have enough witches to complete a coven. The only way to survive is to pull together this pack of magicborn misfits, who have more secrets than spells, into a makeshift coven.
Can we—three untrained witches, a sarcastic warlock, and an overly intense guardian—take back the city…before the demongate falls and the forces that killed my mother destroy us too?

*This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions and thoughts are my own.*
Alix thought that she had closed the door on magic ten years ago when she had abandoned all hope of ever being like her mother, the leader of a powerful witch coven. One night things start to unravel, bringing her close to a supposedly dead guardian, her childhood friend and fellow witch Callie, and a stubborn warlock, who says he's going to help them.
The Coven's job is to take care of the demon's who are trying to cross the border, but without there being one for the last ten years, the demons have gotten out of control. With their parents dead, Alix and Callie have only the help of a guardian and a warlock to learn how to wield their powers and form their triumvirate, in order to defeat the demons.
Personal life and magical circumstances mingle in this wonderful tale. I have to admit that, at first I was a little hesitant, going into this story, but Alix's wonderful personal strength and captivating personality soon had me glued to this adventure.
When one reads a book in which the characters call and seduce oneself, one is always impressed. Excuse my wording in the previous sentence but that is how I truly feel (and using "one" makes it sound fancier). Magical worlds and magic itself have always fascinated me and I can surely appreciate how the author was able to combine both into a wonderful book "potion".
The mix between the real world, with its technology and modernity, and the somewhat archaic world of magic, turn this book into a unique story. If magic wasn't enough there is even the "warrior" aspect of the story and the family circumstances embedded in the plot.
Besides being very entertaining and fun to read, I believe this book contains a series of lessons that are very useful in everyday life, regarding personal strength, reliance on others and family. I believe this is a story most people would appreciate and cannot wait to read what comes next for Alix and her friends/allies.
